What makes a diamond a Browns Diamond?

Over the years we have developed our own proprietary grading system to ensure that only the best most brilliant diamonds become Browns diamonds. We employ some of the country’s most qualified gemologists with many years of diamond and precious stone grading experience. Every single diamond set in our workshop is individually selected, graded and approved as having met the stringent qualities of a Browns Diamond. Only diamonds which have qualified as a Browns Diamond can be certified and will be considered for setting in one of our fine pieces of diamond jewellery.

We only select diamonds that have been cut to proper proportions, based on the Tolkowsky ideal. A Browns diamond must be rated colour “H” or better with a clarity rating of “SI” or better. The exact parameters of a Browns diamond are one of our best kept secrets. They are based on the traditional 4 C’s but also include a 5th “C” – Combination and “2T’s” – Transparency and Treatment. It is the perfect balance between all of these characteristics that result in the exceptional brilliance demanded of a Browns diamond.

Which "C" is the most important?

At Browns we believe that there is a 5th “C”, Combination, and this is arguably the most important. A diamond's quality depends on a combination of the traditional four "C"s. However, if considering only the traditional 4 C’s we believe that the most critical of these is the cut. Too often the cut is sacrificed for the diamond weight. At Browns we understand that the cut, more than any other factor, determines the brilliance, fire and beauty of a diamond.. . Read more about Browns diamond grading

Is tanzanite a precious gemstone?

Yes! Traditionally in order for a gemstone to be called precious it had to be beautiful, rare and durable. 1000 times more rare than a diamond and more radiant and luminous than a sapphire tanzanite is most certainly precious.

What are the chances of finding tanzanite elsewhere in the world?

Due to the unique geological conditions required to form tanzanite geologists estimate that the chance are less than one in a million.

Is it true that the supply of tanzanite will run out in 10 years time?

Geologists estimate that the only know source of tanzanite will run out within one generation. For this reason tanzanite is often referred to as the gemstone of one generation.
