Why Select A Browns Diamond

Learn More

Over the years we have developed our own proprietary grading system to ensure that only the best most brilliant diamonds become Browns diamonds. We employ some of the country’s most qualified gemmologists with many years of diamond and precious stone grading experience. Every single diamond set in our workshop is individually selected, graded and approved as having met the stringent qualities of a Browns diamond. Only diamonds which have qualified as a Browns diamond can be certified and will be considered for setting in one of our fine pieces of diamond jewellery.

Only 1 in a million carats of diamonds mined are gem-quality and approximately 5 million carats must be mined to get a single 2 carat gem-quality diamond. It is this combination of antiquity, purity, endurance, beauty and rarity that have captivated people for so long and which continue to make Browns diamonds so desired and sought after.

Diamonds that meet the Browns quality standards are also exceedingly rare.
Only 2% of the world’s diamonds are eligible for a Browns setting.

South African Diamonds

Learn More

We have various initiatives which actively support South Africans such as our plumtree project and it forms part of our Company’s core values to support local business and buy South African products and services where ever possible. (READ MORE)

The Diamond industry Is highly complex and unlike most others. Ever since diamonds were first discovered here they have been mined and then sent in their rough form to other parts of the world for cutting and polishing. As a result of this there are almost no diamonds which are actually cut and polished in South Africa as the highly specialist skills and equipment required are not readily available.

Diamonds are one of our country’s greatest sources of wealth however, much of this wealth is lost when South African rough diamonds are sent abroad for processing. The South African government ¡s actively pursuing ways in which we can increase the level of diamonds which are cut and polished locally.

This program is of national importance and Browns actively supports the endeavour. As such we have been involved in putting together strategies with Government and other Institutions to initiate programs which would support the beneficiation of diamonds locally.

Part of the government’s plans to make opportunities for local diamond beneficiation is to raise public awareness, of the challenges which face the local diamond industry as well as building South African diamonds as a brand.

As we continue in our quest to source diamonds which have been mined and polished in South Africa we have created our South African Diamond logo to guarantee a stone’s origins. When you purchase a diamond from Browns, this logo is placed on the Certificate of Authenticity whenever the origin of the diamond can be certified as 100% South African

More than just the 4Cs

Learn More

Traditionally diamonds have been graded according to the 4Cs; Colour, Clarity, Carat and Cut. However, this is an oversimplified means of evaluating diamond quality. We have therefore incorporated two additional Cs, Combination and Character.

You might ask, which C is the most important? At Browns we believe that this is the 5th C, Combination. A diamond’s quality depends on the perfect combination of the traditional 4Cs. However, if considering only the traditional 4Cs we believe that the most critical of these is Cut. Too often the quality of the cut is compromised in order to gain extra diamond weight. At Browns we understand that a diamond’s cut, more than any other factor, determines its brilliance, fire arid beauty, which is the epitome of every Browns diamond.

The colour grade of a diamond is actually determined by its lack of colour. The more colourless the diamond, the greater its rarity and value. A single increase in colour ,grade can boost a diamond's value by thousands of dollars, depending on the stones size. Although many diamonds may appear colourless to the untrained eye the majority contain very slight traces of yellow, brown or grey. Each stone is colour-graded to a precise scale from “D” (colourless) to “Z” (lightly coloured).

Browns diamonds are colour-graded by an independent registered laboratory and certified as such in the certificate that accompanies every diamond engagement ring sold. Diamonds also occur by rare accidents of nature in shades and intensities of yellow, pink, blue, green and red. These are referred to as Natural Fancy Coloured Diamonds’. Browns diamonds hold a colour grade of “I” or higher.

Virtually all diamonds have imperfections called inclusions or blemishes. A diamond is said to be “flawless” if no inclusion; or superficial blemishes can be seen under a standard 1 0-power jeweller’s loupe. Truly flawless diamonds are exceedingly rare and priced accordingly.

Browns holds high standards in that each and every stone over 0.25ct goes through a stringent gemological grading in an independent laboratory. A very small percentage of the diamonds examined are accepted.
All Browns diamonds hold a clarity grade of Sl” or higher.

The Cut refers to the precise proportions and positioning of the facets on a diamond’s surface. An expert diamond cutter must place each of the stone’s facets and angles, which act as light dispersing mirrors, in exact geometric relation to one another. More than any other factor, the precision of these facets determines the brilliance of the diamond. Browns uses the most skilled and experienced diamond cutters to ensure that our diamonds are precisely proportioned to reflect light and maximize brilliance. An inexperienced cutter could easily ruin a fine diamond. In order to display the maximum amount of brilliance, a classic round brilliant diamond must have 58 facets precisely aligned to the ideal Tolkowsky proportions. Adding multiple facets does not increase a diamond’s brilliance, but rather does quite the opposite.

Most other diamonds are cut deeply to maximize weight or wide and shallow to appear larger, however, this results in a loss of brilliance, dispersion scintillation, fire and ultimately beauty. Whilst other diamonds are cut to maximise carat weight, Browns diamonds are cut to maximise brilliance. We will not compromise in this crucial area but rather sacrifice more of the rough stone and offer our clients only those diamonds cut to perfect proportions, so that the extraordinary brilliance and scintillation is noticed, even across a crowded room.

The Symmetry of a diamond is determined by the perfectly proportioned cut, which eliminates irregular shaped facets, incorrect angles, off-centre tables and culets and wavy or non-parallel girdles and tables. The quality of a diamonds polish also ensures its beauty. Browns diamonds insist upon the finest polish, symmetry and precision of cut

A “carat” is the gemmologist’s standard measure of a diamond's weight. It is important to note that the size alone is almost meaningless unless you consider cut, clarity and colour. A large stone holds little value if it lacks brilliance, purity or a high colour grade. However, size does increase the value of a good quality diamond for the simple reason that large stones are rare- than small ones.

No two diamonds are exactly alike. It is essential that all of the characteristics of each diamond are perfectly balanced. Ultimately it is this unique combination which results in a diamond of exceptional brilliance, a diamond which meets the stringent demands of Browns standards.

Having considered all of these Cs we are left to make the decision whether or not the diamond has the attraction and charm required of a Browns diamond. This allure is best described as brilliance in motion — the flashes of white light from the facets when the diamond, the wearer or the observer moves.

All Browns diamonds 1.00ct and above are certified by the Gemological Institute of America. The GIA is the most reputable diamond grading organisation in the world. How do I know my diamond is what they say it is? Every diamond is utterly unique, and all the critical qualities of your diamond will appear on the accompanying certificate. At Browns, every diamond ring starting at 0.25ct is sold with an independent laboratory certificate, which includes the exact measurements of your stone as well as the colour, clarity, carat weight, cut, transparency and treatments.

The Hearts and Arrows’ phenomenon occurs when a traditional 58 - facet round brilliant diamond is precision cut to the ‘ideal proportions’ with superior optical symmetry and polish. When all these factors are in harmony the result is seen in a continuous, rear perfect pattern of eight symmetrical arrows in the table up position called ‘crown’ and eight symmetrical hearts when viewed in the table down position, called ‘pavilion’.

This optical symmetry can be seen in all Browns diamonds through a special tinted loupe. Only the ‘Arrows' pattern can be seen in diamonds which are already set. ‘Hearts and Arrows’ Is only a tell-tale sign of a diamond’s cut quality, therefore it is not recognized by the GlAS nor featured on their certificates.
