At Browns we feel that it is not only the responsibility of individuals and a select few to protect and preserve the environment but that companies such as ours should be leading the way. At Browns we understand that in order to reduce global warming and climate change we all need to make changes to our lifestyles and establish new environmentally responsible business practices. As a result we are trying to instill a culture of environmental awareness and respect in all our employees whether at work or at home.
As part of the Browns Plumtree Project we will be planting enough trees per year to offset our carbon emissions. To calculate your own carbon emissions visit Food & Trees for Africa and use South Africa’s first ever CO₂ calculator.
Although recycling has yet to catch on as it has in Europe and elsewhere we believe that it is one of the most effective means of addressing environmental issues. The benefits are vast and it is something that everyone can participate in relatively easily. At Browns we encourage our employees and business partners to take responsibility for themselves and to recycle wherever possible. At our support office we recycle and compost all organic waste and recycle all of our plastic, glass and paper.
While not a commercial enterprise, we have recently planted our own food garden at our support office premises. This food garden is another way in which Browns employees can get personally involved not only by enjoying fresh fruit and vegetables but by taking the opportunity to really get their hands dirty.
